VM1958 Mini Concave COQUINA LIMESTOME Mosaic
Coquina is a unique and visually rich sedimentary limestone, formed almost entirely from consolidated seashells, coral fragments, and marine debris, typically found in coastal regions such as Spain, Florida (USA), and parts of Mexico. The name “Coquina” comes from the Spanish word for “cockle” or “shellfish,” a fitting tribute to its shell-rich composition.
Unlike traditional limestones, Coquina is highly textural and porous, with a distinctive appearance that showcases visible fossils, shell imprints, and organic inclusions. Its natural palette ranges from pale beige and sandy cream to warm honey tones, offering a rustic, beachside charm that evokes coastal landscapes and ancient seabeds.
Geologically, Coquina is composed mainly of calcium carbonate, but with a more open and irregular structure than denser limestones. It is often used in architectural facades, feature walls, garden elements, and restoration projects, where its organic texture and natural storytelling create a strong visual and historical impact.
Due to its high porosity and low density, Coquina is not recommended for high-traffic flooring or wet interior areas without special treatment. However, when properly sealed and used thoughtfully, it offers an incomparable aesthetic with a tactile, fossil-rich surface.
This is considered normal:
-
Visible shells, fossilised marine fragments, and voids: Defining characteristics of Coquina and highly valued.
-
Irregular surface texture and porosity: Expected and celebrated for its raw, natural look.
-
Colour variation between pieces: Typical due to natural mineral content and fossil distribution.
Coquina is more than just a stone — it’s a slice of ancient marine history. Ideal for projects seeking authenticity, texture, and a direct connection to the natural world, Coquina brings warmth, storytelling, and unique character to any environment.
