General FAQs

Q: Is tile appropriate for a kitchen?
A: Yes, tiles are actually recommended for a kitchen. Their resistance to heat and moisture, durability, and ease of maintenance make them perfect for the kitchen.

Q: Can tiles make a small room look larger?
A: Yes, larger tiles give a cleaner look and can actually make a small area look larger. Depending on the room's size, 400 x 400 mm tiles will create the illusion of a larger room.

Q: Will tiles fade over time if exposed to direct sunlight?
A: No. A tile's color and glaze are fired  at temperatures up to 2300 deg. F. This allows tiles to be installed in sunrooms, outdoors, or any other sunny places without concern about fading.

Q: What determines the grout color?
A: You want to use a complementary grout color to create a more uniform, blended look. Contrasting grout colors tend to highlight each tile, creating a more dramatic grid effect. Ultimately, an individual's taste and style will determine the grout color selected.

Q: Will grout stain or get dirty easily?
A: No. Grout will look as good as new for years if a penetrating type sealer is used after installation and spills are cleaned up quickly.

Q: Is there any on-going maintenance with tiles?
A: No. All that is necessary is damp mopping or sponging with a mild cleaner, if the tiles are properly installed.

Ceramic tiles are one of the most practical building materials ever made. They have proven their durability and flexibility over thousands of years.

Floors tiled in ancient Rome are still in use today. The Romans were prolific users of ceramics to tile walls, floors and to create magnificent decorative effects in their palaces and public areas.

However, today there are so many tiles for so many purposes that it is important that you choose the right ones for your project.

We can use tiles today in every area of our homes. Bathrooms, kitchens and laundries are no longer the sole area of attention. Bedrooms, patios, balconies, swimming pools, garages, and passageways all benefit from being tiled rather than using alternative coverings.

What are Ceramic Tiles?
Ceramic tiles are relatively thin slabs of ceramic material in varying shapes and thinknesses.  Ceramic tiles are made from mixtures of clays, sand and other natural substances and are then moulded into the required shapes.  They are then fired at high temperatures between 900 and 1250 degrees celsius, depending on the type of tile.

Like all ceramic materials, tiles are hard, strong, hygienic, easy to clean, not combustible and fire resistant. These are the general advantages; there may be some differences, between the different types of tile. They are also "stiff" (they do not warp or become bent). These are all characteristics that are intrinsic to the nature of ceramic materials.

Uses of Ceramic Tiles?
Tiles can be used on walls and floors and are a building material that adds the finishing touches to your home.  Tiles must serve two purposes:

1.  A design function
2.  A technical function, as a building material that is able to withstand, without cracking or deteriorating, the various types of stress to which it is subjected by its environment.

 Advantages of Ceramic Tiles?
1.  Easy to clean and simple to maintain - sweeping and a mop with warm water mixed with a neutral cleaner is all that is required. Tiles are easy to maintain, they will not become shabby or threadbare and will not burn.

2.  Durable - hard wearing and low maintenance. The high hypo-allergenic factor, easy maintenance and longevity make them an ideal choice for those with busy lifestyles.

3.  Hygienic - the prevalence of asthma in our community is a concern, which has encouraged many Australians to select ceramic tiles in preference to carpet, which houses dust mite a known trigger of allergy related attacks.

4.  Energy efficient - in winter tiles act as a natural heat bank absorbing sunlight shining through windows and glass doors, storing that energy during the day. In the evening tiles re-radiate that stored energy for hours. In summer tiles soak up the heat during the day to make the home cooler and reduce air conditioning costs. If the sun is kept off tiles in summer they will remain cool.

5.  Light and UV resistant - unlike carpet, tiles do not fade over time with exposure to sunlight.

6.  Moisture and damp resistant - tiles are generally not affected by moisture and wet conditions.

7.  Resistant to stains and chemicals - tiles are extremely durable in a domestic situation and are resistant to stains and household chemicals.
